About

Since 2005 Jane Houghton and Andrew Budd have designed and completed projects that explore their long standing interests in the relationship between a project's setting, its formal composition and the materials of its construction.

Each project is considered to be a site specific, one-off commission, and we apply our interests consistently to develop ideas that are transformative yet rooted in their setting; we work in both urban and rural settings, using the materials of each place as the inspiration and pallete for our designs, using robust, honest and sustainable materials to create rooms and buildings that are intended to be timeless and long-lasting.

We work with both analogue and digital methods, using models and sketches to communicate our proposals describing the potential and possibilities of the brief to our clients. These methods and techniques are also used in architectural education as both Jane and Andrew are senior lecturers at Kingston University, jointly running an undergraduate design studio as well as teaching representation and construction. In addition they have been tutors and critics at other leading schools of architecture and Andrew is currently a visiting MA critic and tutor at Nottingham University.

Our practice has been recognised by the RIBA for the quality of its design work and projects have been published in both the national and architectural press including The Financial Times and Architects Journal.

We are happy to be commissioned for specific stages for a project and will apply the same level of interest whether we are completing a feasibility study or developing a project from its conception to its completion. We are experienced with the design of both individual rooms and houses and also multi-occupancy developments and are also happy to advise on the interior design of our projects and have specific interest in post-war European furniture and fittings. Our fees are proposed based on the level of involvement required, the complexity of the project and the time needed to be able to fulfil the requirements of the brief. We work regularly with leading firms of consultants including structural engineers and sustainability advisors who are familiar with our approach and share our values.

The practice is registered with the RIBA and carries the appropriate level of indemnity insurance; testimonials are available on request.
